About This Scheme

The "Emeritus Fellowship" is a scheme of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, aimed at providing an opportunity to highly qualified and experienced superannuated teachers to pursue advanced research in their respective fields of specialization. The fellowship enables retired teachers to continue contributing to academic research and knowledge creation in recognized higher educational institutions across India. The fellowship may be undertaken in: - Universities, Institutions, and Colleges recognized under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. - Deemed-to-be Universities eligible to receive grants from UGC under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. - Universities, Institutions, and Colleges funded by the Central Government or State Governments. - Institutes of National Importance.

The following assistance is provided under the scheme:

  1. Honorarium of ₹31,000 per month for a period of two years (non-extendable).
  2. Contingency Grant of ₹50,000 per annum (non-lapsable) for:
    • Secretarial assistance.
    • Travel within India related to the research project.
    • Stationery and postage.
    • Consumables.
    • Books and journals.
    • Equipment required for research.
  3. Permission for one foreign visit per year related to the approved research work, subject to prior approval of the host institution and UGC, with no financial liability on UGC.
  4. Medical facilities and other institutional privileges available to university faculty members, excluding housing facilities.
  5. The fellowship is awarded for a maximum period of two years or until the fellow attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

Fellowship Slots: Total: 200 fellowship slots at any given time

  • 100 slots for Science disciplines.
  • 100 slots for Humanities, Social Sciences, and Languages.

  • Continuation Certificate (for subsequent installments).
  • Progress Report.
  • Utilization Certificate and Contingency Grant Account Statement.
